Avery Close But Not Yet And Other Notes

Sean Avery will be with the Rangers on Thursday and Friday on their western trip, but according to Tom Renney he’s still a ways away from suiting up.

“[He'll] drive us bananas because he is itching to play,” Renney said. “He’s a few days away from serious contact and there’s still a little bit of pain there. We can rehab him, and he could be day-to-day in two days.”

***

Al Montoya was called up in case Henrik Lundqvist was not ready after coming down with the flu. Based on last night’s perfromance, The King was ready.

***

The line shakeups seems to work very well.

Jaromir Jagr seemed pleased with playing next to Scott Gomez: “From the first time we played together, Scotty is a lot more confident. He’s gotten a lot quicker.”

Gomez on Jagr: “I think that was the problem in the beginning, I was thinking too much,” Gomez said with a laugh. “We get in trouble when we start to think. We’re just a bunch of hockey players.”

Chris Drury and Brendan Shanahan also seemed pleased, although Shanahan wantes to take some time before passing judgement. Said Shanahan: “It was good. I though at a certain point of the game, it seemed like we were getting more special teams shifts together. We killed a lot of penalities. He had a lot of shifts with Nigel [Dawes], but then we couldn’t string them together. It’s tough to gage.”

Dawes Player of the Week and Wolf Pack Weekly for December 10

The American Hockey League today named Hartford Wolf Pack left-wing Nigel Dawes the Rbk AHL Player of the Week for the week ending December 9th. Dawes totaled three goals and five assists for eight points in the Wolf Pack’s three games on the week, as the Pack ran their streak of games with at least a standings point to eight straight (7-0-0-1).

On that note, here’s the rest of WPW

The Wolf Pack have now recorded at least a standings point in eight straight games (7-0-0-1), 12 of their last 13 outings (11-1-0-1) and 14 of their last 16 (13-2-0-1), after a 2-0-0-1 week this past week.  The Pack saw their season-high five-game winning streak come to an end in a 4-3 shootout loss Wednesday night in Providence, but rebounded to post victories against Lowell, 3-1 at home, Friday and Worcester, 7-1 on the road, Saturday.  The win in Worcester represented the Wolf Pack’s biggest offensive output thus far on the year, and their largest margin of victory.  Nigel Dawes set a franchise regular-season record with six points (2-4-6) in Saturday’s game and notched a total of 3-5-8 in the three games.  That performance earned him Rbk AHL Player of the Week honors.  Al Montoya was in net for all three contests and is now 5-0-1 in his last six decisions and 6-1-1 in his last eight.
This week:
The Wolf Pack start a four-game homestand by hosting the Houston Aeros on Wednesday (7:00).  The Manchester Monarchs then make their first visit of the season to the Hartford Civic Center Saturday night (7:00).

Tuesday, December 11th – Wolf Pack Holiday Party at Connecticut Children’s Medical Center, 4:00 –

            6:00 PM

The entire Wolf Pack team will join more than 100 cancer patients and their families for their 11th annual Holiday party at CT Children’s Medical Center, 282 Washington St. in Hartford.  The party has become an annual tradition and a perennial favorite of players during the holiday season.  The team will be signing autographs and doing crafts with, and distributing goodies to, children undergoing treatment for, and recovering from, cancer.

Could Mess Be In?

With Don Maloney out, the Rangers will need a new second man in the front office. Both Mark Messier, who desired Glen Sather’s job back in February and Adam Graves are candidates. As is Jim Schoenfeld, the Hartford GM.

Of the candidates, Sather will look to retain someone who will do the legwork Maloney did over the past decade in teh front office. Both Messier and Graves are inexperienced, yet could get some sort of position to begin their careers, but Schoenfeld has the knowledge of the organization, so will also a considerable look.

Eventually Messier will probably work his way up to the job, The Captain said he was moving to New York and wanted to be Slats’ successor. So, it would be hard to fathom if he was left out in the cold.

As for Maloney, Sather may have a trading partner. Larry Brooks mentioned a possible Al Montoya for the third overall pick. We shall see what prospects Maloney liked more than Sather and if any deals come to pass.

You can read more about this on NY Sports Day.
